- Recovered blue Nokia cell phone belonging to Ramon Suarez. The phone is discolored with rust, and its screen is cracked.
- Historical Notes
- Ramon Suarez came from his native Puerto Rico to New York with his family as an infant. He lived in Ridgewood, Queens, with his wife, Carmen, and had three children. Ramon enjoyed running, going to the gym, and practicing karate. A member of NYPD Transit Bureau District 4, he was assigned to the Delancey Street subway station. On September 11, Officer Suarez responded to the towers. He was 45 years old.
Curator's Comment
A police officer with the NYPD’s Transit Bureau for 14 years, Ramon Suarez was frequently assigned to the Delancey Street subway station on New York City’s Lower East Side. Although this post kept him belowground for much of his shift, it also afforded him the opportunity on most days to meet up with his wife, Carmen, at an arranged location on the subway platform during her commute to work. Suarez also found time throughout the day to call Carmen, using the cell phone he always carried. In the spring of 2002, his phone was recovered at Ground Zero and delivered to Carmen by the NYPD.
