- Recovered passport case belonging to Toshiya Kuge. The black fabric case has a zipper; its long lanyard permits wearing it around the neck. The case shows little sign of damage.
- Historical Notes
- Toshiya Kuge was born in Osaka, Japan. He lived in Tokyo, where he was a sophomore engineering student at Waseda University. Toshiya was eager to become fluent in English so he could apply to an American university for graduate school. In late summer 2001, he spent two weeks touring the United States and Canada. On September 11, he boarded Flight 93 on his way home to Japan. Toshiya was 20 years old.
Curator's Comment
This passport case was carried onto Flight 93 by college student Toshiya Kuge, who was homebound to Japan after two weeks touring Canada and the United States. His mother had added a second string to reinforce and protect the case’s contents against loss during Toshiya’s travels. Investigators found it at the crash site near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Its relatively undamaged appearance may be attributed to the care taken by authorities to clean recovered property before the items were released to victims’ relatives.
