- Passaic, New Jersey, native R. Bruce Van Hine lived with his wife, Ann, and their two daughters in Greenwood Lake, New York. Bruce often went for day hikes on sections of the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, leaving Bibles in shelters along the way. A 12-year FDNY veteran, on September 11, Firefighter Van Hine responded to the towers with his unit, Squad 41. He was 48 years old.
Curator's Comment
When not on duty as an FDNY firefighter assigned to Squad 41, Bruce Van Hine loved hiking. Over the years, he day-hiked the lengths of the New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut segments of the Appalachian Trail. During these expeditions, he often left Bibles donated by a member of his church in the wayside shelters he came across. Shortly before September 11, Bruce fulfilled a dream of camping out for a night along the trail.
