Ambulance, Recovered
- Description
- Destroyed FDNY ambulance. The hood and cab of the ambulance are completely crushed, and its front wheels are removed. The back is covered in scorch marks, a large burn hole is in the side door, and the interior of the vehicle was entirely gutted by fire. Other parts of the vehicle are dented and deformed.
- Historical Notes
- First responders parked police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and other vehicles at staging areas around the periphery of the World Trade Center. As the towers collapsed, the emergency vehicles functioned as temporary shelters. Some individuals dove for cover beneath them while others entered through unlocked doors to escape the dust clouds and debris that damaged or destroyed many of the vehicles. This ambulance, driven by EMS Battalion 17 emergency medical technicians Benjamin Badillo and Edward Martinez, was parked near Vesey and West Streets.
