- Finder scope belonging to Howard L. Kestenbaum and used to find targets when attached to a larger telescope. The apparatus is black and white and has an additional lens.
- Historical Notes
- Newark, New Jersey, native Howard Kestenbaum lived in Montclair with his wife, Granvilette. The two had a grown daughter. Active in his synagogue and community, Howard visited congregation members in nursing homes and volunteered at a homeless shelter. He worked as a senior vice president at Aon Corporation. On September 11, Howard was at his office on the South Tower’s 103rd floor. He was 56 years old.
Curator's Comment
Howard Kestenbaum earned a PhD in astrophysics from Columbia University and taught there for several years. Although he later switched to a career in financial services, Howard “at heart was always an astrophysicist,” his wife, Granvilette, said. He recruited his family to observe celestial phenomena outdoors, often late at night and in winter. Coworkers at Aon Corporation dubbed him the company’s “rocket scientist.”
