Seal, Recovered

Description: Fragment of the seal of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management. The seal is heavily damaged and covered in dust.
Historical Notes: 7 World Trade Center was a 47-story office building just north of the Twin Towers. It housed a diversity of private tenants and government agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM). OEM operated a high-tech command center on the 23rd floor.

Many of the building’s occupants evacuated immediately after the North Tower was struck by hijacked Flight 11. OEM temporarily shifted its operations to a command bus located nearby. The collapse of the North Tower caused significant damage to 7 World Trade Center and ignited intense fires. Concerns that this building might also fall prompted evacuations of rescue workers from the vicinity. After burning for hours, 7 World Trade Center collapsed at 5:20 p.m., destroying the command center.

Only half of the seal of the NYC Mayor's Office of Emergency Management was located in the wreckage of building 7.
