Wallet, Recovered
- Description
- Recovered red wallet belonging to Giovanna Galletta Gambale. The wallet is significantly damaged with encrusted dust and warped from exposure to the elements. There are scorch marks and soot stains on the fabric. Inside the wallet are several credit cards and paper receipts.
- Historical Notes
- Lifelong Brooklyn resident Giovanna Galletta Gambale, known as Gennie, lived with her parents and siblings in Carroll Gardens. She enjoyed soap operas, New York Mets baseball games, and time with her boyfriend, Tom. On September 11, Giovanna was at work on the North Tower’s 105th floor at Cantor Fitzgerald’s subsidiary eSpeed, where she was a vice president in charge of conferences and events. She was 27 years old.
Curator's Comment
The recovery of personal property in the wreckage strengthened the resolve of workers discouraged by the realization that some victims’ remains might never be found. About two weeks after 9/11, a police officer found a damaged wallet in the ruins. Opening the wallet to look for identification, she recognized the owner’s name as that of her daughter’s friend Giovanna Gambale. The wallet was returned to the Gambale family through the NYPD Property Clerk Division's WTC Property Recovery Operation.
