Native New Yorker Seymour Denby (1913-2011), known as Sy, was a ham radio operator. For more than 30 years, he ran an electronics store, Niagara Radio Supply, in the downtown area known as Radio Row. He participated in the coalition of local store proprietors and retailers who came together to protest the construction of the World Trade Center and take legal action against the Port Authority. Like others, Denby was evicted but received no financial compensation because he was a tenant at, not an owner of, his property.
Denby's son, Robert, donated these items belonging to his father from the Radio Row era.
Curator's Comment
The intersection of Greenwich and Dey Streets was at the heart of a commercial district nicknamed Radio Row. Known for its numerous mom-and-pop electronic shops, Radio Row was home to more than 350 small businesses in 1966, when construction of the World Trade Center began.
The World Trade Center faced grassroots opposition from small businesses, chief among them retail stores in the area slated for demolition. Shop owners protested on the streets, in the press, and in the courts. The legal battle ended in November 1963 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the merchants. Demolition of the neighborhood began on March 26, 1966.
