- Description
- Multicolored lanyard bracelet with heart key chain created by Asia S. Cottom. The lanyard is made with plastic lacing cord in a variety of colors. The attached key chain is a gold-colored heart with a blue center and printed text: "October | Opal" and a small opal birthstone.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, Asia Cottom lived in Washington, D.C., with her parents and brother. A member of her church’s dance troupe and choir, this sixth grader at Backus Middle School had been chosen to attend a National Geographic Society field trip to California. On September 11, Asia was heading there aboard Flight 77 with her teacher, Sara Clark. She was 11 years old.
Curator's Comment
In the fall of 2001, Asia Cottom was excited to be a sixth grader at Bertie Backus Middle School in Washington, D.C., where her father, Clifton, worked. According to Clifton, Asia was “not standing still for nothing.” She tried everything from computer science to choir to jewelry making. She made this lanyard, featuring a heart-shaped pendant with an opal birthstone, as an October birthday present for her father. To honor Asia’s inquisitive nature, the Cottom family created a memorial scholarship fund that has assisted more than 90 college-bound students who share Asia’s passion for academics.
