Pocket Rosary
- Description
- One decade pocket rosary beads belonging to Raymond Matthew Downey, Sr. The beads are attached to a key ring and are comprised of one decade of Hail Mary prayer beads, and one Our Father prayer bead—for a total of eleven beads. Four small medallions depicting the Virgin Mary are attached to end of the beads.
- Historical Notes
- Queens native Raymond Downey lived in Deer Park, Long Island, with his wife, Rosalie. They had raised five children. A former U.S. Marine and 39-year FDNY veteran, Raymond was an expert on building collapses and had responded to the bombing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1995. He led the FDNY’s Special Operations Command. On September 11, Battalion Chief Downey responded to the towers. He was 63 years old.
