Necktie
- Description
- Brown silk uniform tie with a repeated graphic of the Twin Towers in the clouds and yellow text printed on the diagonal: "Observation Deck WTC." This tie belonged to Alfonse Joseph Niedermeyer.
- Historical Notes
- Queens native Alfonse Niedermeyer lived in Manasquan, New Jersey, with his wife, Nancy, and their son. The two were expecting a second child. A 16-year PAPD veteran assigned to its commercial vehicle inspection unit, Alfonse was commended in 1992 after rescuing passengers from a jet that had crashed during takeoff. On September 11, Officer Niedermeyer aided evacuees in the South Tower. He was 40 years old.
Curator's Comment
At 1,377 feet, the South Tower Observation Deck’s outdoor viewing platform was the highest in the world. On a clear day, one could see for 45 miles in each direction from the Observation Deck. On average, the Observation Deck attracted 1.8 million visitors per year. From the opening day of the Observation Deck in December 1975, through close of business the night of September 10, 2001, approximately 46,350,000 visitors experienced the views from the top of the South Tower.
