Shadowbox
- Description
- Shadowbox created in memory of John Joseph Florio for his wife, Shari. The gold-framed box contains Florio's recovered Engine 214 fire helmet front piece with his badge number, "213." The box also contains a recovered wooden chock or wedge and collapsible metal spanner wrench. The small plaque in the left corner reads: "Fire Fighter John J. Florio | Fire Department - City of New York | IAFF Local 94 | September 11, 2001."

- Native New Yorker John Florio lived in Oceanside, Long Island, with his wife, Shari, and their two children. He was a heavy metal music fan who corresponded with the lead singer of the band Metallica and played the band’s music while on the job with FDNY Engine Company 214. On September 11, Firefighter Florio was covering a shift for another firefighter and responded to the towers. He was 33 years old.
Curator's Comment
These items belonging to first responder John Florio were recovered with his body at Ground Zero. The helmet front piece bears the number of Firefighter Florio’s Brooklyn firehouse, FDNY Engine Company 214, along with his badge number, 213. Above the helmet plate are a spanner wrench, used to tighten fire hose couplings, and a wood chock for keeping doors open. Surviving members of Engine Company 214 returned the items to John’s wife, Shari, who preserved them in a reliquary.
