- Navy blue long-sleeved button-up uniform shirt belonging to Vincent G. Danz. The shirt includes four patches. On the left breast above the pocket is a blue patch with white embroidered text: "NYPD | POLICE | Emergency | Service Unit." On the right breast above the pocket is a smaller blue patch with white embroidered text: "DANZ 2166."
On the left upper sleeve is the NYPD emergency squad patch with a blue border and emergency squad emblem. The NYPD patch is on the right upper sleeve with a yellow border and a NYPD official emblem. Two small "E3" patches are on the collar.
On the back of the shirt is a large dark blue patch with white embroidered text: "NYPD | EMERGENCY | SERVICE UNIT." - Historical Notes
- Jackson Heights, Queens, native Vincent Danz lived in Farmingdale, Long Island, with his wife, Angela, and their three daughters. At home, Vincent spent time with the girls, riding bikes and watching cartoons. At work, the former U.S. Marine was a 14-year NYPD officer and rescue expert assigned to Emergency Service Squad 3. On September 11, Officer Danz responded to the North Tower. He was 38 years old.
Curator's Comment
A reservist in the U.S. Coast Guard and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Vincent Danz earned seven decorations during his 14 years with the New York City Police Department. In 1995, he joined the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit, where members are trained to assist people trapped or injured in dangerous situations. On the morning of September 11, Officer Danz was finishing an overtime shift when he responded to the North Tower to aid in the evacuation and rescue efforts. At his memorial service, colleagues remembered Vincent as a “spit-and-polish” cop, or neat dresser, who also liked to joke around.
