- Memorial button created in memory of Steven Joseph Bates and left at the 9/11 Memorial. The button depicts a photograph of Bates with his dog, Samantha.
- Historical Notes
- Born in East Meadow, Long Island, Steven Bates lived with his girlfriend of 10 years, Joan, in Glendale, Queens. During 18 years with the FDNY, Steven—whose mother died when he was 15—came to regard firehouse friends as family. At Engine Company 235, Steven was known for cooking his specialty dish, sauerbraten. On September 11, Lieutenant Bates responded to the World Trade Center. He was 42 years old.
