Curator's Comment
It took Pia Hofmann, a member of Local 14 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, one week to persuade certain officials that she could handle working at Ground Zero. By the time she arrived on site and was assigned to debris removal, Hofmann had a clear sense of what she wanted to achieve: returning the remains of loved ones to their families. When, after weeks at the site, Hofmann recovered the remains of a civilian, she insisted that the remains be accorded the same honor in removal as had been previously reserved for the remains of uniformed responders. From that day forward, when civilian remains were found, a member of the clergy was summoned, an honor guard formed, and the remains draped with an American flag as they were carried from the site.
