- Love note handwritten by John T. Vigiano II on a card accompanying flowers given to his wife, Maria. The note is dated November 20, 1992. The note reads: "Simply because | if it wasn't for | you – | Life would suck! | I Love You." It is signed "me."
- Historical Notes
- Queens native John Vigiano lived in West Islip, Long Island, with his wife, Maria, and their two daughters. A member of FDNY Ladder Company 132, he was cocaptain of his firehouse’s hockey team. On September 11, Firefighter Vigiano responded to the towers and was seen in the Marriott hotel lobby. His brother, Joseph Vigiano, an NYPD detective, was in the North Tower. Both perished. John was 36 years old.
Curator's Comment
FDNY Firefighter John Vigiano lived on Long Island with his wife, Maria, and their two young daughters. Though John and Maria first met in elementary school, they began dating when John was working as a bus driver in the same school district where Maria taught. Throughout their relationship, he sent flowers with handwritten cards to her. The bouquets marked occasions big and small and expressed his gratitude for her companionship and affection. One card celebrated John’s finishing his FDNY probationary training period in 1990, confiding in Maria, “Your support did it all for me!”
