- American Red Cross Disaster Relief uniform vest. The vest is a gray-and-white smock style with the Red Cross logo on the upper right breast. On the back of the vest is printed a large red cross with "American Red Cross | Disaster Relief" printed below.

- Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
Curator's Comment
A former New York City resident, Teresa Kochowicz came from her home in Connecticut a few weeks after 9/11 to volunteer with the American Red Cross. She went to Brooklyn for training and registration and after a single day, she was issued an ID and assigned to the World Trade Center Respite Center at St. John’s University on Murray Street in lower Manhattan. During her four weeks of service as an American Red Cross Disaster Relief Volunteer, Kochowicz worked shifts in the kitchen where she helped cook cafeteria-sized pans of “stick-to-your ribs” comfort foods for recovery workers coming from Ground Zero.
