- Light-blue VMAT patch with dark blue-trim and "VMAT" embroidered in dark blue. Images integrated into the letters represent elements of natural disasters. The “V” suggests a tornado, “M” a fire, “A” lightning, and “T” a bending palm tree for hurricane.
- Historical Notes
- The Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT) program was established by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in 1993. It is a private-public partnership with the federal government funded by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). In the event of a disaster, federal and state governments ask VMATs to provide veterinary medical treatment to animals. VMAT, part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), is coordinated by the Department of Health and Human Services.
Curator's Comment
Following the events of September 11, 2001, Dr. Frederick Lewis, Jr., was deployed to Ground Zero as the acting Team Commander of the Veterinary Medical Assistance Team 2 (VMAT-2). He and his team provided medical attention to search-and-rescue dogs, police horses, and other injured animals found near the site.
