Airplane Fragment, Recovered
- Description
- Recovered small metal airplane fragment with irregular edges and scratched green paint. On one side, the fragment contains partially visible metal-stamped numbering (“-608” and “Lot 5”) and what appears to be a circular seal or logo with the number 281 inside it. On the other side, “Sep 11” has been scratched into the fragment.
- Historical Notes
-
Pedestrians on blocks surrounding the World Trade Center encountered unfamiliar metal objects on the ground. Not everyone immediately recognized these as parts of the aircrafts that had struck the Twin Towers.
This object was sent to the Museum unsolicited in 2021. A contact at the National Transportation Safety Board identified the fragment as part of United Airlines Flight 175.
