- Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting the rescue and recovery operations. Brothers Bryan and Kevin Pigott were not affiliated with ironworker unions, but their father was a master welder/blacksmith. Both men had grown up lending a hand in his shop and felt comfortable volunteering when an urgent appeal circulated for “anyone with construction or welding experience” to report to the stricken World Trade Center on the afternoon of 9/11. The brothers stayed on the scene only overnight, assisting the seasoned ironworkers in moving steel remnants to improve safety conditions for the bucket brigades searching the pile.
After they left, Bryan felt motivated to retain the protective gear provided to him by the ironworkers he encountered and later donated the welder’s gloves he had worn to the 9/11 Museum.
