- Handmade stuffed teddy bear known as a “Carrie Bear,” created in memory of Joseph John Angelini, Jr. The bear is made from navy cloth and wears a yellow bow around its neck. The FDNY insignia patch is sewn on the front of the bear. On the back of the bear is embroidered text that reads: “In loving memory of | Joseph Angelini Jr., | Ladder 4, September 11, 2001.” An American flag is embroidered on the right arm of the bear.
- Historical Notes
- A lifelong Lindenhurst, Long Island, resident, Joseph Angelini lived with his wife, Donna, and their three children. He liked to cook and garden. Joseph followed his father, Joseph Angelini, Sr., into the FDNY, joining Ladder Company 4. On September 11, Firefighter Angelini, Jr., responded to the World Trade Center. His father also reported. Both men perished. Firefighter Angelini, Jr., was 38 years old.
Curator's Comment
Carrie Pike creates memorial teddy bears to help people remember loved ones who have died. After the September 11, 2001, attacks, Pike partnered with Caring Connections with the goal of making a Carrie Bear for each of the fallen FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority responders. Many volunteers assisted with the endeavor, enabling the creation of bears bearing the insignia of the agency with which each uniformed victim was affiliated.
