- Martin Morales Zempoaltecatl was born in Santa Catarina, Mexico. In 1998, he came to New York City hoping to learn English and earn enough money to build a house back home. Living with relatives in Elmhurst, Queens, Martin did odd jobs until he was hired as an assistant chef at Windows on the World in 2000. On September 11, Martin was at work on the North Tower’s 106th floor. He was 22 years old.
Curator's Comment
In the days following 9/11, relatives and friends of those who had not returned home from the World Trade Center posted missing person fliers at hospitals, family assistance centers, and public places throughout the city. As hope for survivors faded, the missing posters themselves became memorials.
Many families taped fliers to the walls both outside and inside of St. Vincent's Hospital, about a mile from the World Trade Center site. More than 300 posters were saved by the staff at the hospital and ultimately donated to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in 2010 when the hospital closed.
