- Bound book of drawings titled "September 11, 2001: The Day They Took the Twin Towers Down," created by elementary students at P.S. 40. The front cover is a child's drawing of the Twin Towers emitting black smoke and text that reads: "They took the Twin Towers down." The inside of the book contains digital print reproductions of 20 children's drawings, each depicting the Twin Towers under attack. Most of the drawings have an accompanying handwritten note in pencil on ruled paper attached to construction paper on the adjacent page. The notes reflect on the child's emotions related to the events.
- Historical Notes
- The drawings in this book represent art by second graders from P.S. 40, an elementary school in downtown Manhattan. Some date from as early as September 13, 2001, but all the art focuses on images of the attacks. Weeks later, their teacher asked the students to write about how they were feeling. These follow-up narratives show that while some children began to feel safe again, for others the fear, sadness, and anxiety continued to linger.
