Backpack

- Historical Notes
- Tracy Sumner was a graphic design manager for Mercer, a global marketing firm with offices located in the South Tower. On 9/11, she commuted to the World Trade Center wearing a newly purchased orange backpack, arriving more than half an hour after Flight 175 had crashed into the building where her offices were located. Upon the collapse of the buildings, she became caught in the plume of dust that enveloped lower Manhattan and sought refuge with several other evacuating civilians in a nearby apartment just off of Broadway. She kept the dust-covered backpack in her possession for over twenty years.
