Flag
- Description
- Folded American flag stored in a wooden display case with a base platform. A small plaque on the front of the base includes gold-colored printed text that reads: "This flag was flown on 31 July 2022 | during the operation that killed Ayman Al-Zawahiri | and is dedicated to all those who perished on | and as a result of the attacks on September 11, 2001."
- Historical Notes
- Ayman al-Zawahiri became the leader of al-Qaeda following Osama bin Laden’s death in 2011. About ten years later, U.S. intelligence agencies tracked al-Zawahiri’s relatives to a building in Kabul, Afghanistan, that they believed to be his safehouse. This flag was flown aboard one of the support aircraft on the mission that killed al-Zawahiri.
