Hard Hat
- Description
- Plastic bump-style hard hat with cap-style brim and interior ratchet suspension. The hard hat appears to be red but the color has worn down to the black plastic. The hard hat is covered in a variety of trade and commemorative stickers, several representing Ironworkers Local 40.

- Larry Keating, a member of the Ironworkers Local 40 union, wore this hard hat when he worked at Ground Zero during the recovery period.
Curator's Comment
Larry Keating joined Ironworkers Local 40 union in the 1980s. For more than 25 years he worked on construction and demolition projects in New York City and the metropolitan area. In the wake of the World Trade Center attacks, he joined the recovery effort for the duration of the nine-month operation.
As a foreman at the 16-acre World Trade Center site, Keating oversaw efforts to dismantle the upright steel remnants of the Twin Towers. As the site’s recovery and cleanup neared completion, Keating signed the Last Column, which was ceremonially removed to mark the formal end of recovery operations on May 30, 2002. Keating was among those chosen to represent workers in the building trades during the folding of the American flag affixed atop the Last Column. He wore this hard hat while standing on the ramp to witness the solemn procession marking the removal of the steel column.
