Trident
- Description
- Steel column fragments, known as Tridents, recovered from Ground Zero. Miscellaneous building materials are attached to the column, including welded wire fabric, steel straps, and concrete.
- Historical Notes
- These two steel columns once formed part of the exterior structural support of the east facade of 1 World Trade Center (North Tower). Welded to box columns at bedrock, 70 feet below street level, these columns branched at the fifth story into the three prongs that give them the name tridents.
Curator's Comment
The Twin Towers were built using modular construction methods. Steel pieces were prefabricated at foundries located across the United States and stamped with a code indicating the ultimate placement of each element. The tridents were manufactured by Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Transported to a staging area in New Jersey and then to the World Trade Center site by flatbed railroad cars, the tridents were fitted into specially designed lifting "bridles" for transportation and were later guided into place along the towers’ facades.
