- Polo Ralph Lauren brand pink polo shirt belonging to George Edward Spencer III. The shirt has a white collar and polo emblem embroidered on the left breast.
- Historical Notes
- Cleveland, Ohio, native George Spencer lived in West Norwalk, Connecticut, with his wife, Catherine. The couple had two children. In his free time, George could be found mountain biking or sailing. A foreign exchange broker at Euro Brokers, he spoke of retiring to a second career as a history teacher. On September 11, George was at work on the 84th floor of the South Tower. He was 50 years old.
Curator's Comment
When George Spencer III worked at a bank in London in the 1980s, his coworkers’ wardrobes consisted of formal, crisply ironed white shirts. George, whose brother described him as “flamboyant,” dared to be a bit different. Each Friday, he wore a pink shirt to the office, instituting a tradition he labeled PSF: Pink Shirt Fridays. Upon moving back to New York City, he brought his Friday wardrobe with him. Many of his friends on Wall Street joined him and wore pink shirts as well. After 9/11, George’s loved ones continued to celebrate PSF.
