- United Airlines flight attendant wings pin belonging to Lorraine G. Bay. In the center of the wings is the United Airlines logo with four stars above the logo. Surrounding the insignia are six inset diamond chips, representing 35 years of service.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lorraine G. Bay lived in East Windsor, New Jersey, with her husband, Erich. A flight attendant for United Airlines for 37 years, Lorraine was known for mentoring younger coworkers and for liberally giving presents and greeting cards. On September 11, after mailing cards to two ailing friends, Lorraine boarded Flight 93 en route to San Francisco. She was 58 years old.
Curator's Comment
With 37 years of service, Lorraine Bay was one of the most experienced flight attendants at United Airlines. She first received this pin, studded with a diamond, in honor of completing 10 years of service with the airline. Every five years thereafter, another stone was added to her wings. “Work was a love affair for her,” a fellow flight attendant said. Lorraine was known for mentoring others just starting their careers. Though her seniority gave her the option to serve in first class, she often chose coach. She was working in that assignment on September 11.
