Bunker Coat
- Description
- FDNY-issued bunker coat worn by Gerard Terence Nevins when he responded to the February 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing. The coat is black, extends past the waist, and has yellow reflective stripes on the arms, chest, and bottom. "3181" and "NEVINS" are written on the inner part of the coat flap.
- Historical Notes
- Native New Yorker Gerard Nevins lived with his wife, Marie, and their two sons in Campbell Hall, New York, where he raised pigs, goats, and chickens. An 18-year FDNY veteran with Rescue Company 1, Gerard carried his appreciation for homegrown food to the firehouse, where he encouraged his colleagues to cook together. On September 11, Firefighter Nevins responded to the towers. He was 46 years old.
Curator's Comment
When the FDNY was issuing new bunker gear in the mid-1990s, Nevins donated this coat to Julian Sosnik, an Argentinian firefighter who trained in New York City with FDNY Rescue 1. Sosnik wore this coat until he retired from firefighting in Argentina and moved back to the United States to pursue his veterinary studies. He later donated the coat to the Museum in memory of Nevins.
