Uniform Coat
- Description
- FDNY Class A uniform coat belonging to Deputy Chief Raymond Matthew Downey, Sr. The coat has two gold stripes on each sleeve cuff and two gold pins on the collar. An FDNY patch is on the upper left sleeve and a Special Operations Command patch is on the upper right sleeve. A name tag with "Downey" printed on the front is attached to the right breast of the coat and more than 20 commendation and service pins are attached to the upper left breast. A small gold angel lapel pin is attached below the collar.
- Historical Notes
- Queens native Raymond Downey lived in Deer Park, Long Island, with his wife, Rosalie. They had raised five children. A former U.S. Marine and 39-year FDNY veteran, Raymond was an expert on building collapses and had responded to the bombing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1995. He led the FDNY’s Special Operations Command. On September 11, Battalion Chief Downey responded to the towers. He was 63 years old.
