Bracelet

- Metal memorial bracelet created in memory of Jerome Mark Patrick Dominguez and Walter Edward Weaver. The bracelet is engraved: "P.O. Jerome Dominguez - P.O. Walter Weaver | NYPD ESS-3 | September 11, 2001." A small American flag is printed to the left of the name and a blue ESU truck to the right.
- Historical Notes
- Jerome Dominguez grew up in the Bronx and lived in Holtsville, Long Island. He was engaged to marry his girlfriend, Jessica. Jerome’s hobbies included riding motorcycles and scuba diving. An NYPD officer since 1985, Jerome served with Emergency Service Squad 3. He was also a U.S. Air Force Reserve member. On September 11, Officer Dominguez was seen climbing a North Tower stairwell. He was 37 years old.
Raised in Hicksville, Long Island, Walter Weaver lived in Centereach with his girlfriend, Shannon. The two often took in stray animals and kept an array of pets including dogs, birds, turtles, and an iguana. A police officer with NYPD Emergency Service Squad 3, Officer Weaver was seen on September 11 working to free people from an elevator on the North Tower’s 6th floor. He was 30 years old.
Curator's Comment
Building on a tradition begun during the Vietnam War era to remember American prisoners of war and those missing in action, bracelets bearing the names of victims emerged after 9/11 as a way to honor those killed in the attacks. Some bracelets also bear personal inscriptions and images, including the American flag, the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and insignia reflecting a victim’s status as a first responder. Whether worn by relatives and friends of the victim or by empathetic strangers, 9/11 memorial bracelets created an intimate connection to individual victims while also communicating a shared sense of loss and compassion.
