Bicycle Rack, Recovered

- Wave-style bike rack with seven bikes locked to the rack. The rack and bikes are coated in a fine dust, and several bikes are heavily damaged.

Bicycle racks were available as amenities for riders, including business tenants in the towers. By 2001, their primary users were messengers with documents and workers delivering orders from nearby delis and restaurants. At 8:46 a.m., bike delivery traffic into the World Trade Center would have been brisk.
This bicycle rack, located on Vesey Street at the northern edge of the complex, was shielded from the impact of cascading debris by 5 World Trade Center.
Curator's Comment
Early in the recovery at Ground Zero, historians suggested that the bikes and bike rack should be preserved. A worker spray-painted a circle around them, and the word "Save" was handwritten nearby. By 2002, the bike rack had been relocated to Hangar 17 at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The hangar was used as a storage facility by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to shelter relics salvaged from the World Trade Center site.
