- Description
- New York State Police Officer Medal of Valor awarded posthumously to James A. Romito. The medal includes the New York State seal in the center with blue enamel surrounding it and raised text: "New York State | Police Officer Medal of Valor." On the back of the medal is engraved text: "PAPD | James A. Romito | Chief | 09-11-01." The medal hangs from a blue-and-yellow ribbon and is enclosed in a presentation box.
- Historical Notes
- Bronx-born James Romito lived in Washington Township, New Jersey. He had two grown children. A PAPD chief, James oversaw PAPD emergency operations and had created a housing and medical program for the homeless at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. On September 11, Chief Romito reported to the North Tower’s 27th floor to lead rescue operations. He was 51 years old.
