- Description
- Port Authority of New York & New Jersey 9/11 Medal of Valor awarded posthumously to James A. Romito. The medal is a gold-colored Maltese cross with a smaller disc in the center with the New York State seal next to the New Jersey State seal and raised text above: "The Port Authority of New York And New Jersey." On the bottom cross arm is raised text: "FOR VALOR." On the back of the medal is engraved "James A. Romito | Chief | 9-11-01." The medal is attached to a blue, gray, and red-striped ribbon on a bar pin. A corresponding ribbon bar lapel is attached. The medal is enclosed in a presentation box.
- Historical Notes
- Bronx-born James Romito lived in Washington Township, New Jersey. He had two grown children. A PAPD chief, James oversaw PAPD emergency operations and had created a housing and medical program for the homeless at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. On September 11, Chief Romito reported to the North Tower’s 27th floor to lead rescue operations. He was 51 years old.
