- Description
- Alfonse M. D’Amato Police Valor medal awarded posthumously to James A. Romito. The front of the medal is red, white, blue, and gold and includes text: "Alfonse M. D'Amato | Police Valor Award," with a version of the Great Seal of the United States in the center. On the back of the medal is engraved text: "The | 2001 | Award | Presented by | The Jeffery Family Foundation | In Memory of | Chief | James Romito | P.A.P.D." The medal hangs from a red, white, and blue ribbon.
- Historical Notes
- Bronx-born James Romito lived in Washington Township, New Jersey. He had two grown children. A PAPD chief, James oversaw PAPD emergency operations and had created a housing and medical program for the homeless at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. On September 11, Chief Romito reported to the North Tower’s 27th floor to lead rescue operations. He was 51 years old.
