National Defense service medal and bars belonging to William F. Fallon. The bronze medal features a bald eagle, perched on a sword and palm, with the inscription "NATIONAL DEFENSE" in a semicircle above. The reverse is embossed with a shield with thirteen vertical bars, half encircled below with an oak leaf to the left and laurel spray to the right, knotted in the center. The medal is attached to a multicolored ribbon with a bar pin for affixing to a uniform.
The medal is accompanied by a corresponding bar of the same color as well as a green bar with blue, red, and yellow stripes. - Historical Notes
- Yonkers, New York native William Fallon lived in Rocky Hill, New Jersey, with his wife, Brenda. The couple had raised a son. William took up running in his forties and was training for a half marathon in Philadelphia on September 16. On September 11, William, a Port Authority general manager, went to work on the North Tower’s 62nd floor. He was 53 years old.
