Curator's Comment
When the South Tower collapsed, it fell onto the Marriott hotel. Five fire companies and an unknown number of civilians were trapped behind a wall of debris. Firefighters on the other side heard their Mayday calls and were able to pass a flashlight through a hole to those trapped inside an air pocket.
Two hotel employees and at least 41 firefighters were among the more than 50 people killed inside the Marriott.
Ground Zero recovery workers found the flag in the debris and returned it to hotel representatives. The flag was folded, framed, and installed in the Marriott corporate headquarters lobby in memory of Joseph John Keller and Abdu Ali Malahi, two employees of the New York Marriott World Trade Center hotel who died on 9/11.
The flag was donated to the 9/11 Memorial Museum in 2012.
