- Description
- 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor awarded posthumously to James A. Romito. The medal is gold-colored with a light-blue enameled five-pointed star surrounded by a laurel wreath. In the center of the star is a dark-blue pentagon with a gilt disc in the center depicting the Twin Towers and an eagle holding the shield of the United States and laurel. "9-11-01" is printed below. The medal hangs from a smaller gold-colored disc with the letter "H" printed inside a keystone, surrounded by a wreath of laurels. The medal is attached to a gold, blue, and white-striped ribbon. Enclosed in the medal presentation box are two corresponding cuff links. On the back of the medal is raised text: "For Heroism, Valor | And the | Ultimate Sacrifice | James A. Romito."
- Historical Notes
- Bronx-born James Romito lived in Washington Township, New Jersey. He had two grown children. A PAPD chief, James oversaw PAPD emergency operations and had created a housing and medical program for the homeless at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. On September 11, Chief Romito reported to the North Tower’s 27th floor to lead rescue operations. He was 51 years old.
Curator's Comment
The 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor was presented by President George W. Bush to the families of the public safety officers killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.
